Cookie Policy
This site uses cookies to enhance your browsing experience. You can choose to disable cookies if you prefer, but this may affect how the website behaves and what functions are available to you. If you do not consent to our use of cookies, you should disable cookies in your web browser before continuing or refrain from using this website.
Cookies aren’t necessarily good or bad, but they are common to most websites, so it’s worth knowing a bit about them. This page is intended to shed some light and help you understand what they are, what they do and how you can control them on your device(s).
What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files placed on your computer or other device (i.e. smartphones, tablets, internet enabled televisions and games consoles) by websites when you visit them. Similar technologies include HTML 5 local and session storage, as well as web beacons or tracking pixels (also known as transparent GIFs, clear GIFs or web bugs).
These technologies are used to retain user preferences, keep you logged in, deliver relevant content, store information in shopping carts and forms, etc. Generally they help the site provide a richer, more meaningful user experience.
They can also provide anonymised tracking data to third party applications such as Google Analytics. While this information can be used to target ads, it is also extremely useful in helping site providers understand how visitors use the site, i.e. what pages they visit, for how long, on what device, etc.
Understanding cookies
Cookies are referred to as either first or third party (i.e. who is responsible for placing the cookie), session or persistent (i.e. how long it ‘lives’ on your device). They are further categorised into one of four types, depending on what they actually do.
First and third party cookies
First party cookies are set by the website the user is actually visiting at the time, i.e. the URL that appears in the address field of your browser or that is linked to via an icon on your desktop or device. Third party cookies are set by a site or domain other than the one that appears in the address field or that is linked to via an icon.
Session and persistent cookies
Session cookies ‘remember’ your actions/preferences for the duration of a browser session and ‘expire’ or are removed when you close the browser window. Persistent cookies remain on your device even after you’ve closed the browser and in some cases will be recognised and used to link your actions/choices across multiple websites.
Cookie types
- Strictly necessary cookies – these are required to make a website work and enable features that users have specifically requested. Without these cookies, certain features simply won’t work. For instance, our chat feature uses several of these third party cookies to function.
- Performance cookies – collect anonymous information about users’ behaviour across a site for the purpose of assessing a website’s performance. We use this information to understand how you use our site, to monitor it’s performance and to improve our content and services to you.
- Functional cookies – allow users to personalise their visit, ‘remembering’ usernames, colour, layout or language preferences, etc. We use them to prevent users from seeing the same popup again and again and we use HTML5 local storage to remember colour choices in our app.
- Targeting or advertising cookies – similar to performance cookies, these collect information about a users’ behaviour. However, the information may be shared across multiple sites and is specifically used for targeting adverts. We don’t set advertising cookies.
What cookies do we use?
We use cookies that are functional, performance or strictly necessary on the Ticyni.com website. You can get more detailed information about the cookies we use by visiting our Cookie List, but in the meantime, here’s a quick overview:
Popup Maker and GDPR Cookie Consent are used for our popups, i.e. our sign up form, some contact forms and for the cookie notification alert that pops up when you first visit this site. These cookies are primarily used to prevent visitors from seeing the same popup repeatedly.
Tawk.to is used to deliver our chat feature, which includes sending emails via the chat box. Tawk.to uses cookies to retain your preferences and for session and connection management.
Occasionally we embed content from other websites, these sites may use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
You can find more specific information about the above cookies in our Cookie List.
More info…
For more information about cookies in general, you might find it helpful to check out ‘Cookies & You’ and ‘All About Cookies’ (both open in a new window; please note that we can’t be responsible for the content of external websites).
Most web browsers allow you to change your cookie settings, but the instructions for each browser will be slightly different and subject to change. It’s therefore best to consult your browser’s own help section for the most up to date details on how to do this.
If you’d like to find out what cookies a website uses, there are some free ‘cookie checkers’ available to help. These tools list the cookies a website sets, simply by popping in the sites’ web address. There are several to choose from – we found http://www.cookie-checker.com/ to be pretty good (again, opens in a new window and we’re not responsible for the content of external websites).
